Wide character CRT screen handling (ncursesw) support was added in version 1.0.1 of this PECL extension.

Ubuntu 10.04 Instructions (and likely other distributions as well, save for the package names):
sudo apt-get install php5-dev
sudo apt-get install ncurses-dev
sudo apt-get install libncursesw5-dev
sudo pecl install ncurses
sudo nano /etc/php5/cli/php.ini # paste "extension=ncurses.so"
